TAZO Brings You: Adventures in Tea

Meet the people who make, market, drink and enjoy TAZO—and the explorer’s spirit that unites them. Each tells a different story, in their own words, but all agree: Often, the best things in tea, and life, are unexpected.

MAKING BOLD MOVES

Small Steps, Bold Moves

I love traveling and exploring new places with friends, and so it was no surprise when one Sunday night my friend Jen convinced me to book a last-minute trip with her to Mexico City. I was excited for the trip and already thinking about all the places we would visit, only to find out the next day that I would be traveling there with work for a commercial shoot! What were the odds the shoot was in Mexico City? Fortunately, I was able to make some quick cancellations and adjustments and squeeze in a few days of travel with friends after the shoot finished.

Both the work and personal experience in Mexico City was incredible. One of my friends grew up there, so we got to see all his favorite spots in the city as well as all the major sites—the ruins, the Frida Kahlo Museum, the National Museum of Anthropology, and Xochimilco, home of the colorful canal boats.

Taking in the vibrant scene, I reflected on how much my life had changed. A few years ago, I was a biomedical engineer creating computer programs for a pharmaceutical company, and now here I was in Mexico City, creating a commercial for a brand that embraces the unexpected. While my professional journey sometimes feels unexpected still to me it’s not so surprising when I consider the small changes that led me here.

I moved closer to my dream job over the years by following my passion. I have always been a creative person and when I was younger, I found myself building things out of everything from cardboard boxes to Lego’s. As a result, it was an obvious choice that I studied engineering in college. After working as an engineer within IT after graduation though, I realized I missed making concrete things—something people could see, feel, touch, and experience.

I decided to go back to school to help redirect my career to something I was passionate about and I chose to get my MBA. People would ask me all the time, why I wasn’t pursuing a career in finance or consulting, but I knew marketing was my calling. I discovered I had a love for consumers and beverages which led me to my opportunity with TAZO. In my job, I get to help people discover products that they love--- I get to understand what consumers think and feel and what is important to them. And whether that’s wrapped up inside a tea bag or commercial, I find it really exciting.

What I’ve learned through my experience is that there’s a lot of pressure to know what you want to do with your life and career. And, it’s easy to get pushed into a routine. What’s important is to listen to what motivates you, find your passion points, and take small steps in that direction. You don’t need a lightning-bolt moment or change. Just start the journey. The pieces will come together, and you will get to where you want to be.
